Early orthodontic treatment
When should my child see an orthodontist?
While it’s never too late to benefit from orthodontic treatment, having your child’s teeth assessed by a kid’s orthodontist early in life can help prevent issues from worsening and avoid more complicated orthodontic treatment later in life. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children get an orthodontic check-up no later than age 7.

Early orthodontics in Leawood
An early orthodontic evaluation does not always mean your child will need or immediately begin orthodontic treatment. Typically, if we determine a need for orthodontic treatment, we will monitor your child’s growth patterns until the time is right for treatment to begin. This observation period allows your kid’s orthodontist to determine the most efficient time and orthodontic treatment for your child to get the best results possible.

At what age can you get braces?
Orthodontic treatment, such as braces for kids, generally starts between nine and 14 years old, as at this age, most of the baby teeth are gone and most permanent teeth have begun to grow in. Sometimes, children will have more severe issues that require early orthodontic treatment for a less complicated treatment process overall.
Orthodontic conditions that may require early treatment with headgear, palatal expanders or braces, include:
Breaking bad habits
Oftentimes, young children develop bad habits such as finger or thumb sucking, tongue thrusting and mouth breathing that can influence the development of their teeth, jaws and mouth. Many of these habits typically disappear before they can create lasting damage. However, if these persist for too long without early orthodontic intervention, they can cause orthodontic issues that continue into adulthood. As some of these issues are difficult to recognize, visiting a family orthodontist at an early age can help you catch these issues in your child before it gets worse. Jeff Thompson Orthodontics offers “habit appliances,” such as a fixed palatal crib or a removable device that can safely and painlessly help curb these habits.
