Surgical orthodontics
What is surgical orthodontics?
Orthognathic surgery, or surgical orthodontics, is an orthodontic treatment that can address jaw and teeth alignment issues that don’t respond to other orthodontic treatments. Jeff Thompson Orthodontics proudly offers jaw surgery in Leawood, Kansas.
When should I get orthognathic surgery?
Surgical orthodontic treatment is only considered an option for adult patients after the complete formation of the jaw to avoid further jaw growth affecting corrections made through orthognathic surgery. Completed jaw formation typically happens between the ages of 14 and 16 in females or 17 and 21 in males.
Do I need orthognathic surgery?
You may be a candidate for surgical orthodontics if you suffer from an extreme bite issue or have facial aesthetic concerns. The first step in learning if you’re a candidate for orthognathic surgery is to schedule a free consultation with Dr. Jeff at our Leawood orthodontist office. At your first visit, we will evaluate your needs, and if we determine you’re a candidate, we will devise a customized treatment plan. It’s important to understand that jaw surgery is a long process that typically takes years to complete.
